I break for newbies

From: quiet_place (letterbox@quietplace.ws) | Date: 2004-07-24 00:07:05 UTC
Brian (or anyone else who know the answer),
What exactly are the criteria for graduating from "newbie" to
the elite that some (evidently) believe they are? I didn't think it
was funny. And, would have gladly e-mailed you to say such, but
feel that someone has to publicly stand up for the underdog, who you
just kicked in the shin.

And, let me clarify to HSeallover7 that we are NOT all as
rude. And though some of us are solitary creatures, we welcome
anyone who finds themselves drawn to this little world of
letterboxing. And thank you for your interest in planting boxes!
I'm hoping you're near NE TN because we need a few more here! :)

I could go on, but I try to remain a

Quiet Place,

I have never met Brian but I think I might know what he was doing here and believe it was misunderstood. A few months ago (and I'm sure several "few months ago" over the years) there was all kinds of dicussion on the list as to how to handle the questions that come from newbies, of which I am still one. There were suggestions to the webmaster to put in their first post verification suggestiong that they might want to read the FAQ's and Getting Started section ASAP as many of their questions would be answered there. I don't think this ever came about. Then Mark Pepe created the "Newboxers" list (God bless 'im!) and there was lot's of discussion as to how to best advise new boxers of all of these resources. Someone suggested when a new boxer posts, whoever wanted to woould reply and give them all the info they will to know where to start their research. I replied offline right away, as I am sure several others did. Several also replied online too. I believe, without having ever spoken
to Brian, that that is what Brian was saying. "Quick, someone reply with the required resources", based on the whole string we had been through a couple of months ago. Brain was very involved in the discussion. We suggested someone should post "got this one" or something but I didn't do it. My bad. Anyway, again, I only know Brian from his posts to this lists (plus the newboxers list) but I am thinking that's what he meant. Or I could be wrong and he could just be really cranky today! Just trying to help,

I would also like to point out that quite possibly we are not all so
thin-skinned and lacking of a sense of humor...

I am an outsider here, so I read it with the eyes of such. Take
my confusion and lack of understanding the "inside joke" as what it
is like for anyone coming "into" this group... for what that's worth
to you.

Carry on with your bad selves.

I know he meant it to be funny (and I even chuckled at it myself), and I
know and love Brian, but we all have to remember that what you type on a
keyboard has no intonation. You have to be very careful that you aren't
going to come across the wrong way. I thought to myself, boy, if that was
the response I got, I would feel very unwelcome...so I had to respond.

We are REALLY all very nice people...Brian very much included, but we don't
all read things the same way.

Perhaps when one actually starts flaming newbies. It's probably a
personal thing. A couple of older posts lampoon the elite/newbie
divide (thanks to H+H for reminding us about and forwarding these a
few weeks ago):

Still a newbie because I've not yet flamed one!
